Get ready for a spectacular visual treat as Sky Sports and NOW prepare to unveil a stunning new artwork ahead of the British & Irish Lions Test matches! This exciting initiative is designed to bring the incredible passion of The Lions directly to fans back home in the UK, ensuring everyone can feel part of the action.
Set against the magnificent backdrop of Cardiff Castle, this unique installation captures the historic spirit of the Rugby tour that captivates fans every four years. Although touring supporters cannot be present in stadiums this year, this wonderful project allows the public in the Welsh capital to savour the atmosphere and share their enthusiasm in a brand new way.
Erected within the city's iconic 2,000-year-old castle grounds, the 'perceptual' art-piece offers a truly magical experience. Known as "The Lion", the artwork changes its form depending on your viewpoint. As you move around the installation, the image will appear to blur into an indistinctive haze before refocusing into a completely new shape!
From one angle, you will see an action-packed Lions player sprinting with the ball towards the try-line. Step to another position, and the image transforms into the powerful head of a roaring lion. This clever design was created in collaboration with Perceptual Artist Michael Murphy to represent the famous "Sea of Red" fans.
The impressive structure measures 7m x 7m and is comprised of 300 pipes suspended from a frame. It is wrapped with 180 metres of coloured vinyl prints, with each colour proudly representing the four nations that combine to create the British and Irish Lions. It is a perfect tribute to the unity and spirit of the team.
Lions fans are invited to visit Cardiff Castle to see "The Lion" in place and enjoy this creative celebration of rugby.
