What a wonderful opportunity for pupils at the John Madejski Academy in Reading! On Tuesday 6 November 2012, students were treated to a truly special hockey masterclass led by the incredible Alex Danson. As an Olympian and a dedicated Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor, Alex brought her wealth of experience directly to the school, creating a memorable day for everyone involved.
The students, who have been carefully selected by their teachers to participate in the Sky Sports Living for Sport project, had the privilege of hearing Alex share her remarkable journey. She spoke openly about how she progressed from playing hockey at school to representing Great Britain on the biggest stage of all at the London 2012 Olympic Games. This firsthand account of dedication and success served as a powerful motivator for the young people present.
Adam Bousfield, Assistant Principal at the John Madejski Academy, described the visit as an inspiring reward for the pupils. He noted that the students were extremely excited about starting their project and absolutely loved hearing Alex's story while learning new hockey skills from an Olympian. The enthusiasm in the room was palpable as the children engaged with the sport they love.
Perhaps most importantly, the day highlighted how sport can teach valuable life lessons. Alex demonstrated that beyond the physical game, there are essential social skills needed to be a true team player. Furthermore, the focus and determination required to do a job well are qualities that can be applied to every aspect of life. The Sky Sports Living for Sport initiative is successfully helping young people discover these important truths.
