Wonderful news for aspiring athletes across the continent! Sky Academy has officially launched its renowned scholarship programme to support and fund sports stars of the future across Europe for the very first time. This marks a fantastic new chapter in the third cycle of the Sky Academy Sports Scholarship scheme, which is dedicated to nurturing young talent.
This year, the initiative is expanding its horizons beyond the UK and Ireland to welcome Italy and Germany into the fold. In total, 12 incredible places will be available. Sky will select one promising young athlete from both Germany and Italy, providing them with essential financial support, a dedicated Sky mentor, and developmental training to help them achieve their sporting dreams. Ten additional candidates will be selected from the UK and Ireland to receive this same high level of support.
The new scholars will be joining a prestigious programme that has already helped over 20 young sportsmen and women reach their full potential. The scheme boasts an impressive list of alumni, including Olympic medallists Katie Taylor (Gold in boxing), Louis Smith (Silver in gymnastics), and Siobhan Marie O'Connor (Silver in swimming). The programme has also supported Paralympian Mark Rohan (Gold in paracycling) and Elise Christie (World Silver medallist in speed skating).
Another exciting feature of the 2017-2021 scheme is that all individual sports are now considered, not just Olympic disciplines. Sky will be selecting athletes competing in any individual sport and will consider sports that have not previously been represented, such as climbing, karting and motorsports, tennis, and golf. Tony Lester, Head of the scheme, highlighted that this expansion provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for athletes from more countries and more sports than ever before.
Prospective scholars from the United Kingdom and Ireland are encouraged to apply via the website. Applications opened on Wednesday 15 February and are open for a limited time.
